Directions of the R.24 Lifeguard Training Prerequisite Swim

Information about the pre-test

  1. Distance Swim with 2 minute timed tread. - Course participants who are just interested in earning their pool certification up to 12 feet of water will have to complete a 200 yard Swim and a 550 yard swim for those who will be completing a waterfront training course.
  2. Participants will jump feet first into the deep end of the pool and swim 6 laps using the front crawl (Freestyle) or breaststroke swim with their face in the water demonstrating rhythmic breathing. On lap 6, before the participant touches the wall, the instructor will ask the participant to start a tread where they will be asked to keep their head out of the water and place their hands underneath their armpits for no longer than 2 minutes. After 2 minutes has passed, the participant will swim 50 more yards ( 2 more laps) using either the front crawl/ free style stroke or breast stroke to complete their distance swim.   Again, You can not stop and must demonstrate your stroke using rhythmic breathing. Goggles can be worn for this portion of the prerequisite swim test. 
  3. Brick Retrieval- A 10 pound brick will be thrown into the pool between 7-12 feet deep. You will have 1 minute and 40 seconds to swim 20 yards down, retrieve the brick, and trail back to the starting zone with your two hands on the brick and your face out of the water. The time does not stop until you and the brick are out of the pool. Participants can not use the steps to exit the pool. They wull have to use the deck to pull themselves out. NO GOGGLES can be worn for this assessment. 
  4. Waterfront Lifeguards  ONLY will swim 25 yards and grab 3-4 rings underwater and swim back to the starting point.
